Matador Restaurant, owned and operated by Ray Tejada and his family will receive the Small Business Award. Matador Restaurant, located in Taylor, is a family-owned business established in 1954. The business was first started by Tejada’s grandfather, was expanded by Tejada’s father, and is currently managed by Tejada, his mother, four sisters and his son. Matador Restaurant’s motto “Be part of the family” stems from the passion and commitment of the family’s relatives and friends who helped to build the business into what it is today.
“We have been a part of the lives of those who live in our community with first dates, marriage proposals, baby showers. birthdays, and many other special events centered here at the restaurant,” explained Tejada.
Matador Restaurant produces nearly 90% of its food at their location using mostly recipes originating from Tejada’s grandparents. The business was originally a drive-in restaurant, and has since expanded to include dine-in, catering and takeout trays. Matador Restaurant has been recognized by the News Herald, Detroit Free Press, WDIV Local 4 Click on Detroit, the Consumer Business Review, and Corp Magazine.
